“The Lydia Initiative helped me understand that doing something is better than nothing.
We started so timidly and without knowing much.

What I soon came to realize is that this ministry is about people with stories and struggles. Sometimes it is not so much what you do or what you give, but the relationships you develop.

It is very satisfying to see women that were once desperate and discouraged now smiling, and having a vision for the future.”

“I joined this initiative because I felt so alone and helpless when it came to becoming a first time mom.

This was until I had caring women in my community who through their listening, knowledge and advocating helped me through this challenging time.

With these women by my side, I felt inspired and empowered to do the same for my fellow sisters. This is why I joined this initiative and will continue to fight for advocacy while using all my knowledge I have gained in my experiences and schooling.”

“The Lydia Initiative began as a movement... in Greece, helping Greeks —living with economic crisis— to help Refugees.

And as I’ve had opportunity to travel the world, I’ve met some truly extraordinary women who feel the desire to help women around them. This is SUCH a blessing to see and is a reminder that we all have something (or some way) to give back.”

“My heart was stolen by the women refugees I met while visiting Athens. I could not imagine what I would do if I found myself in their shoes! I observed them uniting together to assist each other. I observed women empowering women, and learned that advocacy has no cultural boundaries because we need each other.

After struggling through a cancer diagnosis, surgeries and chemotherapy as a mom with young children, I realized how much I needed my community. I was hundreds of miles from my family, and I felt so alone. It was this community that cooked for us, cleaned our house, babysat my children, and just overall encouraged my family during those difficult days.

The Lydia Initiative is one way I can reach out to other women - here in the states as well as around the world - to listen and encourage, and help others through the difficult days.”
